You may want to edit the Windows registry without using the "Microsoft Registry Editor" ("Regedit") program built into the operating system. Perhaps you have a compromised system laden with viruses or malware that disable the ability to open "Regedit" or the command prompt ("cmd"). A beginner can use a third-party application to edit the registry without causing harm to the system.
Instructions
Things You'll Need:
• Windows PC
• "Registry Commander"
• "RegEditX"
• "RegmagiK"
Get the Software Ready
1.
Choose one of the three programs listed in the Things You'll Need section. Click on the link in the Resources section to the one you would like to use.
2.
Install the registry editing software. The software will recommend that you install it to your main hard drive (usually the C drive).
3.
Double-click on the shortcut for the program, either on your desktop or in the start menu.
Using the Software
4.
Edit the registry as you wish. The "Registry Commander" interface displays the same fields and values as the built-in program and shares features with "Regedit." "RegEditX" looks very similar to "Regedit" as well. This program comes with a help manual that guides you through editing the registry. "RegMajiK" also bears a resemblance to "Regedit" and will walk you through the steps to begin editing the registry.
5. Avoid performing actions other than those recommended by the software.
6. Restart your computer.
